Final of the Open Pairs
Sunday teams results
Intermediate, junior and novice pairs
These results from Saturday come from my scanning of the results, so apologies for any errors. There were twenty pairs entered in these three categories, mainly Intermediate. A combined event was held. Andrew Cushnie and Martin Rew won the Intermediate. Maciej Szczesny and Andeana Pilalis were first Juniors and second overall. Pam McMillan and Julie Kropp were first novice.

George Masters Swiss Pairs
As well as naming rights, George Masters entered a further bid or two and made some other plays over most of Tuesday to obtain an even stronger hold on the event, partnering with Wayne Burrows to win with 91.34 VPs. Locals Graham Stronach and Sandy McKirdy were second on 83.25, followed on by Don and Robyn Nightingale. In the winners' photo below, there appears to be some indication, put forward by Johnie Davidson, of a previously unknown third member of the team.
Wellington Congress Open Pairs
Final of the Open Teams
Some of the leading teams from Saturday were still in the frame after the eighth and final round of the Open Teams. The Carryer team on 119.06 VPs came out ahead of the Herries team on 109.28. The next three teams were the Ker, Jacob and Blackstock teams. The members of the winning team were Colin Carryer, Sandra Calvert, Wayne Burrows and George Masters. (It's hardly necessary to mention that George is one of the regular Sponsors of the Congress.) We listed the members of the Herries team in yesterday's report.

Intermediate and Junior Teams
Because of low entry numbers in the Junior teams, we combined the Intermediate and Junior Teams events. This didn't seem to be an issue for our Junior Teams, as they filled both first and third places. The Hunter team (Adrienne Dale, Eirlys Hunter, Grace Millar and Miriam Lewin) came first with 59.09 VPs, with the Potter team second on 55.36, from another Junior team, the Smith team, on 55.06.

Half way in the Open Teams
At the end of the first day, the Herries team (Annette Henry, Anna Herries, Michael Whibley and Matthew Brown) are in the lead with 68.58 total VPs. The Jacob team, 57.99, the Carryer team, 57.65, and the Woodhall team, 57.04, fill the next three places. There are 34 teams, facing another 4 twelve board matches tomorrow.
Junior Pairs
Eight pairs contested the Junior Pairs. Eirlys Hunter and Grace Millar were convincing winners on 62.30%. Miriam Lewin and Adrienne Dale were second on 52.78%.
Intermediate Pairs
Sixteen pairs took part in this event, with very small margins between the top performing teams. In fact, two pairs tied for first. Graham Potter and John Black, Denise Barnett and Jeremy Morley, both averaging 54.67%. (Jeremy missing from the photo to the right, Graham on the left.) The third pair, Martyn Rew and Chriselda McMillan, were 0.27% behind on 54.40%, just ahead of two other pairs scoring over 54%.

It's the 22nd
and the Congress is about to start. After you have picked up your booklet and name tag, bought your raffle tickets and said "gidday" or equivalent several times, have a look around the Wellington Club. If you were here last year, you might notice new paint and new table cloths. We'll leave you to pick up other changes. No prizes for this, though. It's the raffle you need for that.
Junior and Novice Players - Entries close soon
We would love to have more entries from Junior and Novice players. The word “Tournament”, especially when put alongside “Congress” sounds daunting, with an implication that some higher standard of bidding and play is required. This is not the case.
Relative beginners can play and have as much fun in our Congress as someone playing in their twentieth year of bridge - maybe more fun. Players in all the grades make an occasional blunder. What can distinguish the open player from the novice is that the blunders might be a bit more subtle, but the outcomes can be just as calamitous. One sucks it up and moves on to the next hand. So do give it a go. Once you have played in one tournament, you are set up for a future of even more bridge and social times in addition to the regular club nights.
No partner? Use the form to ask. We will do our best to find someone to play with you.
Entries to the Congress close on the 17th April.

Congress Entry and Payment - Thursday 2 February 2017
As in previous years, you can enter the Congress via this website, but payments need to be made separately, as described in the entry form and elsewhere. This is to keep Congress costs, and hence entry fees, low. We will keep this issue under review for future years, depending on demand
Website starting up - Tuesday 31 January 2017
Welcome. This year we are setting up a Wellington Regional Congress Homepage within the Regional Committee website. More pages and links will be added over the coming days.
This is a first for us, in that it brings most of the relevant information about the Congress into the one place.
We will provide for you to enter Congress, seek partners or team-mates, or book an airport Shuttle within these pages. Additionally, you will be able to contact us with feedback or suggestions. We welcome these.
